What Makes it a Room?

Lisa has never really had her own room. Like most of our children, she has had her season of being bounced between others' rooms and most recently has been sleeping in a bed set up in open space in the basement. After painting and carpeting one section of the basement I organized the other end for Lisa. I set up her bed, dresser, and toy shelves with two blue area rugs. I told her that the blue rug area is "hers".

She is thrilled! She's announcing (bragging) to everyone that this is her room. Owen, who hasn't wanted to set foot in that section of the basement for months, now wants nothing more than to be in "her room".

It's all good for Lisa, though, and confirms for her that this "room" is legitimate (even if it has no door). I knew something had to be done several weeks ago when I sent her down to her room to cool her temper. She put her hands on her hips and stated,

"Just because it has a bed and a dresser doesn't mean it's a room!"

She had to be sent down again today. There were no complaints.
